Football Ticket Glossary

Plain-English definitions for the ticketing terms that get thrown around: ballots, member's price, ticket exchange, hospitality, away end. Look up anything and jump back.

Arsenal Red membership: Arsenal's standard paid membership — the entry-level tier above Digital. Gives you access to home and away ticket ballots, members' merch and the welcome pack. Above Red sit Silver (highest paid tier) and the season-ticket-holder waiting list.
Authorised reseller: A club-approved partner who can legally resell tickets at marked-up prices — typically hospitality packages and premium experience providers. Different from the unofficial secondary market, which is illegal in the UK.
Auto Cup Scheme: Season-ticket-holder benefit that automatically charges you and reserves your seat for every cup fixture the club hosts. Skip-the-queue convenience — cancel before the deadline if you can't make a specific game.
Away end: The section of an opposition stadium allocated to visiting supporters. For Premier League games the away club typically gets 3,000 seats. The loudest part of any ground — singing, banners, away-day energy.
Away points: Loyalty markers for attending your club's away matches. Most clubs sell big away tickets in points-priority order — every away game you attend banks another point. Top games typically need 8+ points; you build them up across seasons.
Ballot: A lottery-style sale used when demand massively outstrips supply — cup finals, FA Cup ties, the biggest home fixtures. You enter, you wait, you find out. Members get priority entry; non-members rarely make it in.
Big six: The six wealthiest English clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham. Tickets for any home game involving two big-six sides sell out instantly.
Bot: Automated software used by touts to buy tickets faster than humans can. Clubs and ticket platforms run anti-bot detection but it's a constant arms race.
Categories (Cat A, B, C): How clubs band fixtures by expected demand. Higher category = bigger fixture = higher prices, earlier sell-outs. A Liverpool home game is Cat A; an early-season midweek League Cup tie is Cat C.
Champions League: UEFA's top European club competition — qualified through league position. Home knockout-round tickets are some of the most in-demand in the calendar; UEFA tickets are usually sold separately from domestic memberships.
Cityzens Matchday Membership: Manchester City's paid membership — currently around £35/year — and the only way to buy City tickets from the club at face value. Members enter ballots for the bigger fixtures.
Club level: A mid-priced premium tier between regular seating and full hospitality — wider seats, dedicated bar/restaurant access, in-seat service. Cheaper than full hospitality but pricier than a standard ticket.
Concourse: The covered walkway behind each stand with food kiosks, toilets and turnstile entries. Where everyone goes at half-time.
Cup final: The end-of-tournament one-off match at a neutral venue. Most tickets go to ballot among each club's members. The rest is hospitality, or impossible.
Derby: A match between two clubs from the same city or with a long-standing rivalry — North London Derby (Arsenal v Spurs), Manchester Derby (City v United), Merseyside Derby (Liverpool v Everton). Highest demand of the season alongside the big-six clashes.
E-ticket: A match ticket on your phone. Most Premier League clubs are digital-only now — you'll need the club's app installed and a charged phone to scan in at the turnstile.
Europa League: UEFA's second European club competition. Easier ticket demand than Champions League home games but still member-priority at top clubs.
FA Cup: The Football Association Cup. Open to every English football club. Single-leg knockout rounds from round three onwards; the final is at Wembley each May.
Family stand: A dedicated section with stricter behaviour rules (no swearing/standing/alcohol) aimed at adults bringing children. Cheaper tickets, more relaxed atmosphere.
Forwarded ticket: A ticket that's been passed to you through the club's transfer system. You scan in at the gate, but the seat allocation belongs to the original buyer — you get whatever section they had.

General sale: The final sales window where any remaining tickets go on public release — no membership required. Rare for top fixtures (they're long gone by then) but common for League Cup early rounds, pre-season friendlies, and end-of-season dead rubbers.
Home end: The traditional singing/atmosphere section behind one of the goals, populated by the most vocal home supporters. Each club has its own — Anfield's Kop, Manchester United's Stretford End, Tottenham's South Stand, etc.
Hospitality: Premium ticket packages — match seat plus food, drink, pre-match meal in a private suite, sometimes a player meet. Always available even when the rest of the stadium is sold out. Typically 5–10× the price of a regular ticket but often the only legitimate option for big fixtures.
Junior membership: Reduced-price membership for under-16s or under-17s, usually £15–25 a year. Same buying access as the adult tier but at junior ticket prices.
League Cup: The EFL Cup — currently sponsored as the Carabao Cup. Only EFL + Premier League clubs. Smaller crowds in early rounds, final at Wembley in February.
Liverpool Light Red: Liverpool's higher-priced paid membership tier (above Official). Unlocks earlier sale windows for home matches and is the entry point for the most competitive home fixtures.
Loyalty points: Markers showing how regularly you've bought or attended in past seasons. Clubs use them to rank priority within a member sale — more points means an earlier purchase window.
Manchester United Official Membership: Manchester United's adult membership tier. Currently around £32/year. Required to buy any United ticket from the club at face value and to enter the away-ticket queue.
Match-day ticket: A single ticket for one specific fixture. Sold via member sales, the Ticket Exchange, hospitality, or (rarely for big games) general sale.
Membership: An annual paid subscription with the club that gives you priority access to buy match tickets. Almost every Premier League club requires one to buy direct — non-members generally can't. Most clubs run multiple tiers with escalating perks.
Member's sale: The exclusive period when only paid-up members of the club can buy tickets for a specific fixture. Usually opens 3–4 weeks before kick-off, ordered by tier (highest tier first).
One Hotspur: Tottenham's official membership scheme. Tiers run Bronze (entry), Silver (mid), Gold (top). Priority and earlier sale windows escalate with each level.
Premier League: England's top tier of football. 20 clubs, 38 matches each (19 home + 19 away), August through May. The hardest league in the world to buy tickets for.
Pre-sale: An early member-only sale window, usually offered to the top membership tier before the main member's sale opens. The first chance to buy.
Priority access: Earlier access to ticket-purchase windows than rank-and-file members. Usually a perk of higher membership tiers or longer-standing members with more loyalty points.
Resale: Buying or selling a ticket second-hand. Always do it through the club's official Ticket Exchange or an authorised reseller — social media DMs and ticket-tout sites are how you get scammed.
Restricted view: A cheaper seat where part of the pitch is blocked by a stanchion, pillar, segregation netting or advertising hoarding. Same atmosphere as a regular seat, just less of the play visible.
Sale schedule: The published calendar showing when each membership tier can start buying for a given fixture. Clubs release these 4–6 weeks before kick-off. Knowing the schedule is the difference between a ticket and refreshing in vain.
Season ticket: A ticket that gets you into all of your club's home league fixtures for the whole season. Bought up-front each summer — typically £800–£1,500 at a Premier League club — and renewed by the same supporter year after year. Waiting lists at every top-flight club run into the tens of thousands.
Senior membership: Reduced-price membership for over-65s. Same access as standard membership at a cheaper subscription cost.
Singing section: A designated area in the stadium where the most vocal supporters are encouraged to sit and chant. Most clubs created these in the 2010s to concentrate atmosphere.
Six-pointer: A league match between two clubs close in the table where the result has outsized impact — three points for the winner, three off the loser. Used a lot at both ends of the table.
Sold out: When the club has no more tickets to sell directly through its sales channels. Doesn't mean unavailable — the Ticket Exchange, hospitality and authorised resale are still open. Usually the default for any big-six home game.
Stadium app: The club's official mobile app — used to buy, transfer, display and scan tickets at the turnstile. Required for most digital-ticket clubs (which is most clubs now).
Ticket Exchange: The club's official resale platform where season-ticket holders sell their seat for matches they can't attend. The only safe resale route — every other secondary site is unofficial. Prices are capped at face value (or close to). Often abbreviated TX.
Ticket transfer: Giving your match ticket to someone else (usually via the club's app) so they can scan in instead of you. Most clubs allow this between named accounts — useful when you can't make a game but want a mate to use the seat.
Tout: An unofficial reseller selling at marked-up prices — usually on social media, classified sites or outside the stadium. Buying from a tout is illegal in the UK and risky: clubs cancel touted tickets at the turnstile when they catch them.
True Blue: Chelsea's official membership scheme, branded after the club's colour. Tiers include True Blue Pride and Plus, with priority sale access stepping up at each level.
Waiting list: The queue for becoming a full season-ticket holder. At big clubs it can run for decades. Joining typically requires being an existing member; some clubs charge an annual fee to stay on the list.
Wembley: The 90,000-seat national stadium in north-west London. Hosts FA Cup and League Cup finals, the FA Community Shield, England internationals, and the occasional one-off neutral-venue club game.
